First inhabited in 1609, Bermuda is a cluster of 150 small islands, arranged in the
shape of a fish hook and located 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Comprising an
area of a mere 21 square miles, it is blessed with a semi-tropical climate, offering
temperate summers and mild winters.
Mark Twain once wrote of this jewel in the Atlantic "
some people on their
way to heaven stopped at Bermuda and thought they had arrived...".
| One of Britains oldest, self-governing colonies, Bermuda has a population of
56,000 people with cultural backgrounds that span the United Kingdom, Africa, the West
Indies and Portugal. With its pristine, pink-flecked beaches and clear blue waters,
Bermuda is a sought-after tourist destination attracting 500,000 visitors each year to its
hotels, cottage colonies and small guest properties. The twin pillars of the economy
tourism and international business flourish in a sophisticated, cosmopolitan
environment that blends neatly with the relaxed, slow-paced atmosphere of an island in the
sun. |

Bermuda, which plays host to a variety of prestigious ocean yacht races annually, is
uniquely located in the Atlantic Ocean to host the Tall Ships and their crews in the year
2000. The island has long been known for its enclosed, picturesque harbours with safe
anchorage and berths for any size of vessel, from 25 yachts to 700 ocean
cruise liners. Having hosted the Tall Ships on three previous occasions, in 1964, 1976 and
in 1984, Bermuda again stands ready to welcome the fleet on its way from Cadiz to the
American East Coast with all of the charm and friendliness for which its residents are
renowned. Return to Useful Info
